Why using a fan at night can disrupt your sleep

Sleep is essential for health and well-being, not just for how long you rest, but for how well your body and mind recover during that time. Most adults need 7–9 hours of quality sleep each night to maintain focus, mood, and immune strength. Poor sleep increases the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and depression. One often overlooked factor affecting sleep quality is room temperature. Experts say the ideal sleeping temperature is between 60–67°F (15–19°C). Too hot, and your body struggles to cool down. Too cold, and muscles tense, disrupting deep sleep.

Your body naturally cools as it prepares for sleep. When the room supports that drop in temperature, you fall asleep faster and reach deeper, more restorative sleep. Melatonin, the sleep hormone, is also enhanced in cooler environments. To optimize sleep temperature, use breathable bedding like cotton or linen, which prevents overheating. Choose mattresses designed to stay cool, such as those with airflow technology or cooling gel layers.

Lightweight sleepwear made of moisture-wicking materials also helps regulate body temperature. Avoid heavy pajamas unless the room is especially cold. Fans, though popular, only circulate air and don’t reduce room temperature. On hot nights, they may not cool you enough. In cooler conditions, fans can cause overcooling, waking you up chilled.

Instead, try white noise machines or soothing sounds through smart devices. Humidifiers or air purifiers can also improve comfort without changing temperature. Prioritizing sleep temperature is a simple but powerful way to improve your rest and feel refreshed each morning.
