My husband and I have security cameras installed all over the house. Importantly, my mother-in-law is unaware of their presence.
When we got back home, I decided to examine the footage. What unfolded on the screen left me utterly shocked. I saw my MIL slowly walking into our bedroom, glancing over her shoulder like she was making sure no one was watching.
She then went straight to my vanity drawer and began rummaging through it — not casually, but with an eerie sort of purpose. She opened every compartment, took out my jewelry box, and held my necklace up to the light as if evaluating its worth. Then she did something even stranger… she pulled a small key from her pocket and unlocked a tiny metal box I had hidden behind the books on my shelf.
My heart dropped. That box contained our spare house keys, some emergency cash, and — most importantly — a USB drive with sensitive personal documents. She stared at the contents for a long moment, then slipped the USB drive into her handbag, zipped it up, and calmly walked out of the room like nothing had happened.
I paused the footage, my hands trembling.
Why would she take that? How did she even know it was there?
Then, at around 2:47 a.m., the cameras caught her coming back, barefoot, wearing a nightgown. She moved through the hallway silently, headed to the kitchen, and began unscrewing the vent panel under the sink. She pulled out a small black notebook and tucked it into her robe.
By the time the footage ended, my shock had turned to a cold, creeping dread. This wasn’t innocent snooping. It was deliberate. Planned.
And she had no idea that every second of it was recorded.
