I Was Exhausted and Overwhelmed—Then I Faced the Hardest Choice of My Life

Parenting six children as a single mother is an enormous challenge, and sometimes difficult decisions must be made for the sake of survival. When exhaustion became overwhelming, the mother asked her teenage daughter, Kayla, to stay with her grand-aunt. Though it wasn’t about rejection, Kayla couldn’t help but question, “Why me?”

For Kayla, the move felt like separation and loss. At 15, her sense of belonging is deeply tied to her family, and she interpreted the decision as a sign of being unwanted. What she doesn’t see yet is that this choice came from love, not abandonment, and from her mother’s wisdom in knowing she needed help.

Experts say that during such transitions, maintaining a strong emotional bond is crucial. Regular communication, validating feelings, and reassuring a child of their importance can protect them from long-term feelings of rejection. Even small gestures, like letters or shared traditions, reinforce love despite physical distance.

While Kayla may not understand her mother’s choice right now, consistent love and communication will help her see the bigger picture in time. Parenting isn’t about perfection — it’s about doing the best you can with what you have and letting love guide even the hardest decisions.
