I never imagined following my ten-year-old son would unravel my husband’s secret life. The moment a young woman opened her door and hugged my child, my world collapsed.
People say curiosity killed the cat — in my case, it destroyed something far more precious.
My curiosity ended the “perfect” family I thought I’d built while climbing the corporate ladder.
“Another business trip?” Benjamin sighed as I packed. “That’s the third this month, Paula.”
“It’s only three days,” I said. “The client’s ready to sign.”
“Liam’s science fair is this week. He hoped you’d be here.”
Guilt flickered, but I pushed it away. “I’ll make it up to him. This promotion matters. You’ll be there for him, right?”
“Yeah,” he said flatly. “I always am.”
The trip was a success. We landed the client, and my boss hinted at a partnership. I returned home triumphant, ready to focus on family. But when Liam came home from school, he barely greeted me. Later, I overheard him on the phone:
“Hi, Mom! I’ll see you tomorrow instead of going to school.”
Mom? I didn’t sleep that night. The next morning, I followed him. Instead of going to school, he walked to a blue house. A young woman answered the door and hugged him like family. I hid behind a tree, heart pounding, then marched up and knocked.
She froze when she saw me. Inside, Liam looked shocked. “This is Melissa,” he said.
Melissa took a breath. “Your husband and I have been seeing each other for almost a year.”
The room spun. Liam added softly, “She’s always there for me, Mom.”
Three weeks later, I filed for divorce. Benjamin moved in with Melissa, and Liam chose to live mostly with them. I turned down the partnership, took a lower-travel position, and started therapy.
I can’t change the past. But I’m ready to fight for my relationship with my son — before I lose him completely.
