As fans mourn the passing of legendary actress Diane Keaton at 79, many are reflecting on her openness about the health challenges she faced during her life. The Oscar-winning star, known for her authenticity and charm, passed away on October 11, prompting an outpouring of tributes from across Hollywood.
Keaton rose to fame in The Godfather as Kay Adams, later earning an Academy Award for Annie Hall in 1977. With a career spanning decades, she received three more Oscar nominations, solidifying her place as one of cinema’s most beloved performers.
While the cause of her death has not been publicly revealed, Keaton was candid about her past health struggles. In a 2015 interview with the Los Angeles Times, she shared that skin cancer ran in her family. “It’s a family history,” she said. “My father had basal skin cancer and my brother had it too.”
Keaton admitted she hadn’t always practiced sun protection. “Back in my 20s I didn’t pay attention much,” she said. “I didn’t start sun care until my 40s.” She was diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma in her twenties and later developed squamous cell carcinoma, requiring multiple surgeries.
In addition to skin cancer, Keaton also revealed she had battled bulimia as a young woman. At her worst, she consumed up to 20,000 calories a day before seeking treatment. “Somebody mentioned I seemed to have mental issues, so I went to an analyst,” she said.
Her candor about mental and physical health inspired many to confront their own challenges. Even in later years, Keaton remained active, creative, and deeply connected to her fans.
In her final Instagram post, she shared a photo with her beloved dog Reggie, writing, “Proof our pets have great taste too! Happy National Pet Day.”
