It was a quiet Saturday morning when little Emma tugged on her mother’s sleeve. “Mommy,” she said with big, curious eyes, “when you were at work, a strange lady came to visit Daddy.” Her mother froze for a second, spoon halfway to her mouth. “We’ll talk about this when Daddy gets home,” she said calmly, even though her mind was already racing.
When her husband, Mark, walked through the door that evening, he was all smiles, holding a bag of groceries. “Hi, family!” he said cheerfully. But his wife greeted him with a knowing look. “Mark,” she said sweetly, “Emma has something to tell you.” His smile faded just a little as he glanced down at their daughter, who was already bouncing with excitement.
“Daddy,” Emma began proudly, “remember the strange lady who came over? She was so nice! She helped you carry Grandma’s big birthday cake from the car!” Mark nearly dropped the grocery bag, but his wife’s raised eyebrow softened as she realized what Emma meant. Grandma had indeed asked a neighbor to help with her surprise cake that morning.
Mark laughed nervously, and his wife couldn’t help but smile. “Oh, that strange lady,” she said, crossing her arms playfully. “Next time, maybe mention that detail first, sweetheart.” The three of them burst into laughter, and dinner that night was filled with giggles and teasing. From that day on, every time Emma saw a new face, she’d whisper, “Mommy, another strange lady!”—and they’d all laugh together again.
