When Grandma passed away, my greedy relatives rushed to her house expecting a big inheritance. I was the only one who took her old dog, Berta, because no one else wanted her and they even suggested putting her down. According to the lawyer, Grandma had left nothing to any of them, which made everyone furious. I assumed all I had received was the responsibility of caring for Berta.
Days later, while petting Berta, I noticed something unusual on her collar—a hidden tag with an address and a locker number, along with a tiny key tucked inside. I followed the clue to the train station, opened locker 153, and found a folder labeled “For Meredith.” Inside was Grandma’s real will, revealing that her entire fortune would go to whoever took Berta out of love—not for money.
Right as I discovered this, my mother and uncle appeared, furious and demanding the documents. Luckily, the lawyer showed up and protected me, confirming that I was the rightful heir because I took care of Berta without knowing about the inheritance.
I cried with relief, missing Grandma but understanding her final lesson: kindness and loyalty are more valuable than greed. I decided to honor her memory by using part of the inheritance to help others—starting with the hospital where I work.
