The narrator marries Christopher, who claims to be a devoted father to his son, Stuart. Six months into their marriage, he says Stuart is gravely ill and needs expensive treatment. The narrator works overtime, drains her savings, and even sells family heirlooms—ultimately giving Christopher over $120,000.
One day, she runs into his ex-wife, who reveals Stuart is perfectly healthy. Suspicious, the narrator follows Christopher and discovers he is secretly supporting another woman, Rachel, and their daughter, using the money. Rachel believes he is separated and building a future with her.
The narrator teams up with Rachel, gathers financial records, and sues Christopher for fraud. In court, he cannot produce any medical bills. The judge rules he defrauded his wife and orders him to repay the full $120,000.
The narrator divorces him, walks away stronger, and finds empowerment in standing up for herself.
