When his wife passed away in November 2022, a man was left with her three adult children, aged 21, 22, and 25. Despite being in their lives for over a decade, they had always made it clear he wasn’t their father. Still, he and their mother had allowed them to live rent-free due to the city’s high cost of living, covering utilities and even food for the youngest, who was still in school.
After their mother died, the stepchildren stopped contributing entirely, refusing to help around the house or take responsibility for anything. The man had to hire a cleaner just to maintain the home, while the older two worked and continued benefiting from his support. Feeling disrespected and taken for granted, he reached a breaking point.
He decided to sell the house, which had significantly increased in value, and planned to move to his cabin. After the sale, he gave each stepchild $10,000 as a goodwill gesture and informed them they needed to move out—something they couldn’t be shocked by since they had seen the for-sale signs and open houses. Despite benefiting greatly, they became upset, claiming he had thrown them out of “their home.”
Many people supported his decision, pointing out that the stepchildren were adults who showed no gratitude or effort. Commenters agreed their mother would be disappointed in how they treated both him and the home. With their pooled money, the stepchildren managed to rent an apartment, now forced to face adulthood on their own terms. Sometimes, peace comes after finally letting go.
