18-year-old high school senior and cheerleader Kimber Mills was tragically shot in the head and leg after being caught in crossfire during a bonfire gathering in Pinson, Alabama. The shooter, 27-year-old Steven Tyler Whitehead—unknown to attendees—arrived unexpectedly and opened fire, injuring multiple people. He was arrested and initially charged with attempted murder, later upgraded to murder as Kimber succumbed to her injuries on October 21 after being removed from life support.
On the day she passed, the hospital held a heartbreaking honor walk. Hundreds of students and supporters lined the hallways as Kimber was wheeled to surgery for organ donation—something she had previously expressed she wanted. Her sister shared that Kimber’s heart saved a 7-year-old boy, and her lungs were given to a woman in New York, allowing her legacy to live on through others.
Kimber had dreams of becoming a nurse after graduation and was known at Cleveland High School for her bright smile, kindness, and energetic spirit. Her classmates and teachers remembered her as someone who brought light into every room. “Love like Kimber,” one friend said, urging others to cherish every moment.
A GoFundMe created to support her family has raised tens of thousands of dollars, showing just how deeply she touched her community. As Blount County Schools shared, “Kimber’s smile and infectious personality will certainly be missed, but she will always be remembered.”
