A sense of worry spread through Middlebury College when 21-year-old student Lia Smith was reported missing after last being seen on campus on Friday, October 17. Friends, faculty, and authorities quickly joined forces as search efforts expanded across the college grounds and surrounding wooded areas. Multiple agencies, including local police, fire departments, and rescue teams, contributed to the extensive search.
On Thursday, October 23, search teams discovered Smith in a field near The Knoll, the college’s organic farm west of campus. Authorities confirmed there were no signs of foul play, and the medical examiner later ruled her death as a suicide. The news brought a deep sense of grief to the campus and beyond.
Middlebury College President Ian Baucom expressed his condolences to the family, calling the loss “profound” and noting Smith’s academic excellence and active involvement in student life. She was known as a dedicated member of the Women’s Swimming and Diving team, as well as the Chess and Japanese clubs. She was pursuing a double major in computer science and statistics and was recognized for her advocacy and kindness.
Tributes poured in from friends, classmates, and community members, who remembered her as a supportive teammate, brilliant student, and compassionate person. Her passing serves as a heartfelt reminder of the importance of supporting mental health and being present for one another during difficult times.
