Ms. Harper loved teaching her class of energetic 2-year-olds because each day brought something unexpected. One morning, she decided to help them learn family names by asking simple questions. She turned to Oliver, a cheerful little boy, and asked, “What’s your mommy’s name?” Oliver confidently replied, “Michelle!”
Encouraged, Ms. Harper continued, “What’s your daddy’s name?” Oliver looked puzzled, his tiny eyebrows scrunching as he tried to think. To help him, she rephrased the question: “What does Mommy call Daddy?” She expected a name like John or Michael.
Instead, Oliver’s face lit up with realization. With complete seriousness, he looked up and proudly announced, “HEY, CAN YOU TAKE OUT THE TRASH!” The entire class burst into giggles, and Ms. Harper couldn’t help but laugh along as other children started sharing what their moms called their dads when they wanted something.
Later that day, Oliver told his mom the story during pickup, and she laughed just as hard, admitting it was spot on. That evening at dinner, Oliver turned to his dad with a huge grin and said, “Hey, Can-You-Take-Out-The-Trash, can you pass the ketchup?” And from that moment, a funny new nickname stuck in the family.
