I’m obese and refused to give up my second seat on a plane for a toddler

A woman faced online criticism after refusing to give up the extra plane seat she bought so a mother’s toddler could sit beside her. The 34-year-old, who is obese, had purchased two seats to ensure comfort during the flight. A mother demanded she squeeze into one seat, insisting the toddler sit in the other, but the woman stood firm and refused.

The flight attendant got involved but sided with the mother, asking the woman to try squeezing into one seat. The mother’s 18-month-old was supposed to sit on her lap, and eventually the attendant told the mom to do so. The woman received dirty looks and passive-aggressive remarks throughout the flight but felt justified.

Many online users supported the woman, condemning the mother and flight attendant’s behavior. Plus-size travel influencer Jae’lynn Chaney emphasized the importance of respecting those who need extra space. Critics argued the mother should have bought a seat for her child instead of expecting someone else to give one up.

However, some comments were less understanding, calling the woman selfish for needing two seats. Despite differing opinions, the fact remained that the woman had paid for the extra seat and was entitled to use it. Ultimately, she chose her own comfort and rights over pressure from others.
