Breastfeeding at my in-laws’ house, I noticed Alexa’s green ring spinning nonstop. A quick Google search told me what it meant — someone was actively connected and listening. My eyes drifted to an open purse nearby, where a tiny camera lens pointed directly at the chair where I always nursed my son. When I confronted my mother-in-law, her face went pale.
She tried to justify it, saying it was “for the baby’s safety” and that she checked in through Alexa “just to make sure” I was feeding him properly. But then her phone lit up — showing a live feed of me breastfeeding. That’s when I realized she wasn’t just checking in occasionally — she had been secretly watching and listening every time. My stomach dropped.
When I told my husband, he didn’t seem shocked or upset. Instead, he defended her, saying she was only trying to help and had more parenting experience. In that moment, I felt completely alone — not just violated by my MIL, but unsupported in my own home by the father of my child.
Now I can’t stop thinking about it — the camera, the spying, the excuses. They say it’s concern, but to me it feels like control and a massive breach of trust. Am I overreacting for feeling violated? Or is this a line no one should ever cross — especially family?
