A tragic accident at Malta’s famous “Kissing Elephants” rock formation has claimed the life of a 26-year-old jet skier after the iconic limestone arch suddenly collapsed. The incident happened around 7 p.m. on June 27 near Comino Island, close to the popular Blue Lagoon, a destination visited by thousands of tourists every year. The victim, reportedly a Chinese national, was riding a jet ski beneath the natural arch when a 32-year-old American tourist jumped from the rock above. Moments later, the formation gave way, sending large pieces of limestone crashing into the water and trapping the rider underwater. His passenger, a 27-year-old Chinese woman, survived and was taken to Gozo General Hospital for treatment, while the American tourist was rescued by a passing boat and was not seriously injured. Rescue teams later confirmed that the jet skier had been found beneath the collapsed rocks with no signs of life.
The collapse shocked visitors and locals, as the “Kissing Elephants” had become one of Malta’s most recognizable natural landmarks because of its unique shape resembling two elephants touching trunks. Outdoor Explorers Malta Boat Trips expressed deep sadness over the tragedy, offering condolences to the victim’s loved ones and acknowledging that natural formations are constantly changing. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine what caused the collapse and whether additional safety measures should have been in place. A witness, kayaker Michelle Attard Tonna, claimed she had noticed a crack in the formation weeks earlier and questioned why no warning signs or barriers were placed near the area. As officials continue their inquiry, the accident serves as a reminder that even famous natural attractions can carry hidden risks, and visitors must respect the power and unpredictability of nature.
