Rama Duwaji (28) is making history as Zohran Mamdani’s wife and New York City’s first Gen Z First Lady. Mamdani’s recent victory as NYC’s mayor marked a major shift in the city’s politics — he is the first Muslim, first immigrant, and first person of South Asian heritage to hold the office. Together they represent a new generation of leadership.
Duwaji is a Syrian-American illustrator and animator, born in Houston and raised partly in the Gulf, educated at Virginia Commonwealth University and the School of Visual Arts in New York. Her work has been featured by major outlets, and she’s known for impactful, socially conscious art. She and Mamdani met on a dating app in 2021 and married in February of this year.
While Duwaji didn’t take the traditional campaign path or appear in all the usual public events, she played a significant behind-the-scenes role in campaign visuals and messaging. Mamdani has openly defended her against online attacks, calling her “not just my wife, … an incredible artist who deserves to be known on her own terms.” He made clear that criticism of her is criticism of his family.
As the city enters this new era, Duwaji’s position signals something new for the office of First Lady — a partner with her own creative identity, a voice beyond traditional ceremonial roles, and a generational shift in what leadership looks like in New York City.
