LAPD Sergeant Dies Heroically Helping Stranded Motorist on Busy Freeway

In the early hours of June 23, Sergeant Shiou Deng of the LAPD was tragically killed while assisting a stranded driver on the southbound 405 Freeway near Getty Center. Responding to a crash, Deng had activated his emergency lights and pulled over to help. As he stepped out of his patrol vehicle, both he and the pickup driver were struck by an oncoming car, killing the driver instantly and fatally injuring Deng.

Sergeant Deng was rushed to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center but later succumbed to his injuries. The freeway was shut down for hours, halting traffic and prompting a police procession honoring his service. City officials, including Mayor Karen Bass and LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell, praised Deng’s bravery and dedication, calling his death a profound loss to the community and department.

McDonnell described Deng as a respected leader with 26 years of honorable service, known for his integrity and commitment to public safety. Tributes poured in from fellow officers, first responders, and city leaders, reflecting on his role as a mentor and friend within the police force’s close-knit family. The department promised ongoing support for his family and plans for a memorial.

The tragedy has also highlighted the dangers officers face on the job and the impact of reckless driving nationwide. Meanwhile, similar incidents, like a recent fatal crash involving a pedestrian in Nashville, underscore the ongoing risks on public roads. Communities continue to mourn victims and call for greater road safety awareness to prevent future losses.
