At 70, I don’t usually bother with makeup or fancy outfits anymore. I’ve grown comfortable in simple clothes and natural skin. But when my granddaughter invited me to her wedding, I felt a spark I hadn’t felt in years. I wanted to look beautiful again—both for her and for myself.
I chose a lovely dress, styled my hair the way I used to when I was younger, and spent hours carefully doing my makeup. When I looked in the mirror, I felt radiant. It had been a long time since I’d seen that version of myself.
But when I arrived at the wedding, the atmosphere shifted. People stared longer than usual, whispering behind their hands. My earlier excitement began to fade with every glance.
Then my granddaughter pulled me aside. She looked embarrassed and wouldn’t quite meet my eyes. She quietly said, “Grandma… why did you wear that? People are talking. You’re standing out too much.”
Her words hit me harder than I expected. Suddenly my dress felt too bright, my makeup too bold, and my hair too elaborate. For a moment, I wanted to shrink away and hide.
