Not every two days, not every four days: how often should you wash your hair, according to a dermatologist?

Experts recommend washing your hair 3 to 5 times a week, depending on your scalp type and daily habits. Regular washing prevents buildup, bad odors, and keeps the scalp healthy for better hair treatments. Dermatologists note that frequent washing does not increase oil production — what matters most is choosing the right routine for your scalp.

Washing within this range helps remove excess sebum and product residue, improves follicle oxygenation, and reduces irritation or odor caused by bacteria or fungi. However, lifestyle factors like exercise, climate, and hair type may require adjusting that frequency.

Spacing washes too far apart can cause itching, flaking, inflammation, and even temporary hair loss. Experts recommend choosing gentle or sulfate-free shampoos when needed, using conditioner only on the mid-lengths and ends, and applying a weekly mask for extra care.

Small habits also help: avoid very hot water, massage with fingertips, rinse thoroughly, and never sleep with wet hair. As a simple rule, most people maintain the healthiest balance by washing their hair three to five times per week.
