A simple winter hack can make your walkways much safer and far less stressful during icy months

As winter settles in and temperatures drop, everyday outdoor tasks become significantly more challenging. Snow, sleet, and freezing rain quickly turn walkways and steps into slippery hazards, increasing the likelihood of falls and injuries. Many homeowners rely on commercial de-icers, but these products can be costly, harmful to surfaces, damaging to plants, and unsafe for pets. Because of these drawbacks, more people are turning to simple, low-cost alternatives made from common household ingredients.

One widely used DIY option is a three-ingredient de-icer that balances effectiveness with safety. It combines a teaspoon of dish soap, a tablespoon of rubbing alcohol, and half a gallon of warm or hot water. When poured onto icy areas, the dish soap helps loosen the surface layer, the alcohol lowers the freezing point, and the warm water helps the mixture spread and begin working quickly. This homemade solution is gentle on concrete and brick, unlike salt, which can erode surfaces and leave stains.
