Why I Refuse to Be My Mother-in-Law’s Personal ATM

A woman wrote to us about struggling with chronic illness, job loss, and tense family dynamics after moving in with her mother-in-law for support. What was offered as a safe refuge quickly became a source of stress when her MIL suddenly demanded payments for utilities, groceries, and even property taxes — costs she simply couldn’t afford alongside mounting medical bills.

Feeling judged and accused of being “ungrateful,” she questioned whether she was taking advantage or whether her MIL was being unreasonable. The truth is more complicated: accepting help and maintaining independence is a delicate balance, and clear expectations should have been discussed from the start.

Our advice emphasized open communication, setting boundaries, and finding non-financial ways to contribute until she gets back on her feet. Support during hardship should feel like compassion — not another burden to carry.

If you’re struggling with difficult in-law dynamics, stay tuned for our next article on how to build healthier, more supportive relationships.
