Last year, I hosted a massive Christmas dinner for 20 people. I did everything: shopping, cleaning, cooking, setting up — the whole thing. My sister showed up late with a cheap store-bought cake and didn’t help at all.
Yesterday, without asking me, she announced in our family group chat that I would be hosting again. When I politely said no, she exploded — calling me selfish, accusing me of “ruining Christmas,” and insisting that because I have no kids, I “owe” the family the holiday.
Not one relative defended me.
I’m exhausted from being treated like the default holiday host just because it’s convenient for everyone else. Saying no wasn’t cruel — it was necessary.
Some traditions need to change, especially the ones built on someone else’s unpaid labor.
