I Took the First-Class Seat — and Something Finally Changed

My dad treated us all to a Hawaii trip for his retirement, but the family dynamic came along for the ride. My younger brother Jake, the lifelong “golden child,” was once again expected to come first. When a flight attendant offered me a free first-class upgrade, the pressure started immediately: Shouldn’t Jake get it? He’s younger. He needs comfort.

I didn’t argue. I just asked one question — if roles were reversed, would anyone give it to me? Jake laughed and said no. That was my answer. I took the seat, sat down, and for the first time, chose myself. The flight was quiet. The silence said everything.
