My Father Went Fishing with His Friends and Forgot My 18th Birthday

Ryder had always hoped his dad would show up for him, but most of his childhood was marked by absence. After his parents’ divorce, his mom worked hard to raise him while his dad seemed to live for fishing trips and friends. Still, Ryder clung to the hope that one day his dad would choose him first. When his 18th birthday came around, Ryder thought this would finally be that moment.

His mom threw him a party, baked his favorite cake, and gifted him the guitar he had dreamed of. Surrounded by friends, Ryder smiled, but inside, he was waiting for one person—his dad. Hours passed, and when Ryder finally called, his father casually answered from a fishing trip, forgetting the importance of the day. The disappointment hit Ryder harder than ever before.

A week later, his dad called him over with the promise of a gift. Ryder’s heart wavered with hope, but when he unwrapped the package, he found a fishing rod. The very thing that had always taken his father away from him. In that moment, Ryder realized he would never be his dad’s priority—only an afterthought squeezed between hobbies.

Walking away with the rod in hand, Ryder felt something shift. He decided to stop chasing after the love his dad couldn’t give and instead pour himself into the people who truly cared—his mom, his friends, and his own dreams. That painful birthday became a turning point, teaching him that self-worth isn’t found in someone else’s neglect but in choosing to value yourself.
