How to Tell If It’s Truly the Spirit of a Loved One—Or Something Else Trying to Reach You

When someone we love passes away, the desire to feel their presence again is natural. Many people report sensing something after the d3ath of a loved one: a gentle touch, a familiar fragrance, or even a sudden wave of peace. But how do we know if what we are experiencing is truly the spirit of a departed loved one—or something else entirely? Distinguishing between the comforting presence of a loved one and the unsettling influence of other forces can help bring clarity, reassurance, and peace of mind

The spirit of a loved one almost always brings with it a sense of familiarity. You may feel calm, safe, and emotionally comforted when their presence is near. It feels like a warm embrace or a reminder that you are not alone. Other forces, however, often carry a different kind of energy. They may trigger unease, sudden chills, or even fear. If the experience leaves you unsettled rather than comforted, it may not be your loved one reaching out.

When loved ones try to connect, they usually do so through subtle, personal signs. You might smell your mother’s favorite perfume, hear a song that was special between you and your spouse, or notice objects connected to them gently moving. These moments are deeply personal and often connected to shared memories. In contrast, other forces can create random or chaotic disturbances that feel disconnected from your life: strange noises, unsettling shadows, or unexplained movements that carry no personal meaning.
