Embarrassing Family Secrets Kids Accidentally Told to Strangers

Spending time with kids is always a blast, but they often say the most unexpected things at the most random moments. Here are 14 stories where kids left everyone stunned with their jaw-dropping remarks.

A 7-year-old once told me he was scared to go into his parents’ room because “Foxy lives there.” Since he was past the usual age of being afraid of monsters, I figured it was just his imagination running wild. Still, I decided to mention it to his mom. Later, I found out that while playing hide-and-seek, he had opened the closet in his parents’ room and discovered a fox costume that belonged to his dad. Ever since then, he had been nervous about going in there, and “Foxy” became very real to him.

I work with young children, and one day, I was asking them if they knew their parents’ names. I asked a little boy, “What’s Mommy’s name?” He said, “Mila.” Then I asked, “What’s Daddy’s name?” He looked really confused, like he couldn’t figure out the answer. So I asked, “What does Mommy call Daddy?” After thinking for a moment, he proudly said, “Big Papa.” I couldn’t help but laugh — it was just so cute and completely unexpected.

Once, while babysitting a 7-year-old girl, she told me that her mom’s name wasn’t actually her real name. She explained that her mom made it up “for work,” and that it felt like having a “new mommy.” I tried to gently ask more questions, but the girl didn’t know anything else. Later, I learned the shocking truth: her mom had actually faked everything — her name, identification, degree, and work history. Nobody knew how she managed to keep it up for so long, but eventually, it all came to light and she lost her job.

At my son’s preschool, the teacher once shared a funny story from story time. The kids were sitting in a circle as she read a book about animals and the sounds they make. When they got to the owl, she said, “This is an owl, and it makes the sound ‘Whooo! Whooo!’” Suddenly, one of the kids excitedly chimed in, “Oh! My mom makes that noise when she’s really happy!” The teacher had to hold back her laughter while the adults nearby exchanged amused glances.
