Little Johnny had just finished dealing with a difficult customer when his boss’s voice boomed across the store, “Little Johnny, come to my office right now!” Startled, Johnny dropped what he was doing and hurried to the back room, his heart pounding. He knew he was in trouble, but he couldn’t figure out what he’d done wrong this time.
“Yes, sir!” Johnny said as he stood at attention in front of his boss’s desk. The boss frowned deeply and said, “Little Johnny, I saw you arguing with the customer who just left. I have told you many times before that the customer is always right. Do you understand me?” Johnny quickly nodded, trying to hide his frustration.
“Yes, sir!” Johnny replied loudly. “The customer is always right.” The boss raised an eyebrow, clearly still annoyed, and leaned forward.
“Then explain to me,” the boss demanded, “why were you arguing with that customer?” Johnny took a deep breath and said, “Because, sir, the customer insisted that I was right — and I couldn’t let him break the rule that says he’s always right!”
