Common Kitchen Items That Don’t Belong in the Dishwasher

Dishwashers are great for saving time, but not everything in your kitchen can handle the intense heat, harsh detergent, and powerful water jets. Sharp knives should always be washed by hand because the dishwasher dulls blades and can corrode metal. Cast iron is another item to keep out, since the machine strips away its protective seasoning and causes rust. Wooden cutting boards and utensils also suffer from prolonged heat and moisture, leading to warping and cracking. Nonstick pans may look fine at first, but repeated dishwasher cycles slowly damage their coating, shortening their lifespan and performance.

Several other kitchen essentials need gentler care. Insulated tumblers and thermoses can lose their vacuum seal, while lids and gaskets may trap grime instead of getting clean. Aluminum and copper cookware can discolor and pit due to chemical reactions with detergent. Delicate items like fine china with metallic trim, crystal glasses, and hand-blown pieces risk fading, clouding, or breaking under high temperatures. Even small tools like graters or garlic presses can hold food in tiny crevices the dishwasher can’t reach. When unsure, hand-washing is the safest choice to protect your cookware, preserve its quality, and avoid costly replacements over time.
