I Kicked My Sister and Her Newborn Out—My Comfort Comes First

A man agreed to let his sister and her newborn stay with him after she found herself without stable housing, believing family should support each other in difficult times. The only complication was his golden retriever, Max, a well-trained and gentle dog he considered part of the family. Soon after moving in, however, his sister began complaining constantly, insisting the dog was dirty and unsafe around a newborn. Despite attempts to compromise—such as keeping the dog out of certain rooms—she continued pushing for stricter rules, even spraying disinfectant on furniture where the dog rested and demanding the animal be kept out of shared spaces entirely. Feeling disrespected in his own home, he eventually lost patience and told her that if she couldn’t accept his dog, she would need to find another place to live.

His sister left in tears, accusing him of choosing a pet over family, and their parents sided with her, arguing he should have been more accommodating given her vulnerable situation. However, many people felt that while new motherhood can bring anxiety and fears about cleanliness or safety, it did not justify disrespecting someone’s home or demanding they change their life after offering help. Later discussions revealed she had few options because their parents had not supported her pregnancy, which added complexity to the situation. In the end, the debate highlighted a difficult truth: helping family often requires compassion on both sides, and gratitude and respect must go both ways when sharing a home.
