Veteran character actor Charles C. Stevenson Jr., best known to many viewers as bartender Smitty on the hit sitcom Will & Grace, has passed away at the age of 89. His son confirmed that Stevenson died of natural causes on January 19 in Camarillo, California. Though his role on Will & Grace appeared across 12 episodes from 2002 to 2020, it left a lasting impression on fans thanks to his warm, familiar presence behind the bar. His final appearance aired in February 2020, marking the end of a long television journey that stretched back decades. Beyond this popular role, Stevenson built an extensive career in both television and film, appearing in classics such as The Naked Gun, Men in Black, Pleasantville, and Ghost World, as well as beloved series including Cheers, Family Matters, Everybody Loves Raymond, The Office, and Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Born in Piedmont, California, Stevenson served in the Navy during the Korean War before studying English at UC Berkeley and eventually pursuing acting. His son Scott fondly recalled how his father often joked that his roles frequently involved “marrying or burying people,” referring to the many religious figures he portrayed on screen. Stevenson prided himself on skillfully filling unscripted moments in scenes, a talent directors appreciated. Off screen, he was a devoted father and grandfather. Stevenson is survived by his five children, eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren, leaving behind not only a memorable body of work but also a legacy of dedication to both his craft and his family.
