Captain Accursio “Gus” Sanfilippo, known from the History Channel series Nor’Easter Men, has been laid to rest after the fishing vessel Lily Jean sank off the New England coast on January 30. The U.S. Coast Guard responded to an emergency beacon from the 72-foot boat, later discovering debris, an empty life raft, and one deceased crew member. The remaining six crew members, including a NOAA fisheries observer, are presumed lost after an extensive search in freezing, dangerous conditions was ultimately suspended. The tragedy deeply affected Gloucester, Massachusetts, where Sanfilippo and many of the crew were part of a close-knit fishing community.
A fifth-generation fisherman, Sanfilippo grew up working on the docks and later captained his own vessel, mentoring younger fishermen while supporting his family. Friends described him as generous, loyal, and deeply connected to his crew. He was also known for building his own home and maintaining strong ties within the community. His funeral drew large attendance, including Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, reflecting the impact of his life and career. Gloucester officials plan to add the names of all seven lost aboard the Lily Jean to the city’s memorial honoring fishermen who never returned home, ensuring their legacy at sea will not be forgotten.
