Why Journey’s iconic frontman went radio silent for 20 years

Steve Perry, the iconic voice of Journey, rose to fame in the late 1970s and 1980s, transforming the band with his soaring tenor and emotional depth. Joining Journey in 1977, he helped steer the band from a jazz-rock fusion group into stadium-rock legends alongside guitarist Neal Schon. Hits like Escape and heartfelt ballads made Perry one of rock’s greatest vocalists, while his 1984 solo single Oh Sherrie, inspired by his relationship with Sherrie Swafford, showcased his personal and artistic passions.

Despite international fame, sold-out tours, and chart-topping albums, the pressures of life in the spotlight took a toll. Burnout and the demands of constant performance eventually led Perry, now 76, to step away from the public eye for nearly two decades, leaving fans and the music world in stunned silence while preserving the mystique of one of rock’s most beloved voices.
