Beloved Australian radio presenter Pete Diskon has passed away at the age of 75 following a heart ailment, shortly after receiving palliative care. His death was confirmed by his wife of 40 years, Shirley, who shared that he died peacefully at their home. Pete’s broadcasting career spanned decades across Queensland, Tasmania, and New South Wales before he made his lasting mark in the Eurobodalla region of NSW. There, he became a familiar and trusted voice on ARN’s classic hits station 2EC, where he spent more than ten years on air. Known for his warmth and professionalism, Pete interviewed prominent politicians and musicians and reported on major national events, including the 1996 Port Arthur tragedy while working in Tasmania. Even after retiring from commercial radio in 2016, his passion never faded, as he continued volunteering at community stations 2EAR Moruya and 88.9 Braidwood Community Radio.
Beyond broadcasting, Pete dedicated himself to public service and community life. He served as a Eurobodalla Shire Councillor from 2021 to 2024, earning respect for his approachable nature and genuine interest in local history and wellbeing. Friends and colleagues described him as caring, thoughtful, and always ready for a conversation. Outside work, he was deeply involved with the Batemans Bay Seahawks Aussie Rules Club and remained a loyal Richmond Tigers supporter, often sharing his enthusiasm on air. Shirley fondly recalled their first meeting at a Mudgee radio station, admitting she once thought his confidence was larger than life, though love later proved otherwise. She remembered him as kind, humorous, and resilient through years of health challenges. Pete leaves behind his wife, children, and grandchildren, along with a legacy of connection, service, and a voice that brightened countless lives.
