College Baseball Player Joey Raccuia Passed Away near a Stadium in Virginia

What began as a routine week at Radford University has ended in profound sorrow for the campus community. Freshman baseball player Joey Raccuia, just 19 years old, tragically lost his life in a car accident near the university’s baseball stadium — a place that had quickly become central to his college journey. According to reports from The Roanoke Times, emergency responders arrived promptly and attempted life-saving measures, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not released additional details. For teammates and fans, the proximity of the accident to the field where he practiced and competed has made the loss especially difficult to process. Raccuia, a middle infielder and right-handed pitcher, was remembered as a focused competitor on the field and a kind, warm presence off it.

The Radford Highlanders baseball program shared a heartfelt tribute, honoring the young athlete’s impact beyond statistics and scoreboards. In a memorial post, the team expressed heartbreak and emphasized how deeply he touched the lives of those around him. Joey was also the son of former Radford head baseball coach Joe Raccuia, making his place on the team deeply meaningful for the program and the broader university family. Friends and classmates recall his determination, humility, and love for the game. Though his time at Radford was brief, his legacy is rooted in family, community, and passion. As the university mourns, thoughts remain with the Raccuia family and all who are grieving this unimaginable loss.
