Evil Dead star Bruce Campbell, 67, reveals he’s been diagnosed with ‘treatable’ but incurable cancer

Horror film icon Bruce Campbell has revealed that he is battling a form of cancer that doctors say is treatable but not curable. The 67-year-old actor shared the news with fans in a heartfelt message posted on X, explaining that he wanted to address the situation himself before rumors began to circulate. Campbell said the diagnosis came as a shock and confirmed that he will need to cancel several public appearances and fan convention events this year so he can focus on treatment. “These days when someone has a health issue it’s called an ‘opportunity,’ so let’s go with that,” he wrote with his characteristic humor. Despite the seriousness of the diagnosis, Campbell reassured fans that he plans to concentrate on getting as healthy as possible over the coming months. His goal is to recover enough strength to promote and tour with his upcoming film Ernie & Emma later this year. While he did not disclose the specific type of cancer, he emphasized that he has strong support around him and intends to keep fighting.

Fans quickly flooded social media with messages of encouragement for the beloved actor, who has been a major figure in cult horror for decades. Campbell first gained fame playing Ash Williams, the chainsaw-wielding hero of Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead franchise, beginning with the original 1981 film and continuing in Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness. His partnership with Raimi continued throughout his career, including memorable cameo appearances in Raimi’s Spider-Man films. Beyond the Evil Dead universe, Campbell appeared in popular television series such as Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess. In recent years he has also taken on roles behind the camera, including executive producing the upcoming Evil Dead Burn. Campbell’s newest project, Ernie & Emma, which he wrote, directed, and stars in, follows a widowed pear salesman traveling to scatter his wife’s ashes in meaningful places. Though facing a serious health battle, Campbell’s message to fans remained hopeful: he described himself as “a tough old son-of-a-b***h” determined to keep going.
