Tommy Lynch, a construction worker from Castle Gresley, Derbyshire, got the shock of his life after waking up with blue-colored skin following two nights in brand-new bedsheets. Feeling unusually tired and looking, in his words, “like an Avatar,” the 42-year-old became alarmed enough to seek medical help after a friend urged him to go to hospital. At Queen’s Hospital in Burton, staff acted quickly, placing him on oxygen and surrounding him with concern as they tried to work out what had happened. Tommy later recalled the strange reaction from people in A&E, saying they stared at him as though they had “seen a ghost.” For a short time, the situation felt serious, especially since even the doctors admitted they had rarely seen someone turn that shade of blue and still walk in conscious. The mystery was unsettling, and Tommy feared something might be badly wrong with his health.
The surprising explanation turned out to be far less dangerous, but no less embarrassing: the dye from his unwashed new bedsheets had transferred onto his skin while he slept. A doctor wiped his arm with alcohol, and when the blue color came off, the truth became clear. Tommy said he was mortified, especially after realizing he had accidentally caused a hospital scare over bedding dye. Still, he decided to share the experience online to warn others to wash new sheets before using them. He explained that he had already looked slightly blue the previous day but blamed the cold, only to wake up “bright blue” after overheating under the warm bedding. Once home, he immediately washed the sheets and never had the problem again, although it reportedly took about a week and several baths for the blue tint to fully fade. His unusual story has since become both a funny memory and a practical reminder about first-use laundry care.
