Your Glass Top Stove Can Shatter If You Make This Mistake

Glass top stoves have become a popular feature in many modern kitchens thanks to their sleek design and smooth cooking surface. Unlike traditional coil or gas burners, these stoves use a flat glass-ceramic top that gives kitchens a clean, minimalist look and is generally easier to wipe down after cooking. However, while they are stylish and convenient, glass cooktops require a bit more care than other types of stoves. Because the surface is made of durable yet delicate glass-ceramic material, certain common mistakes can cause scratches, cracks, or even serious damage. One of the most common issues happens when the surface is exposed to sudden temperature changes or when unsuitable cookware is used during cooking.

Thermal shock—when the glass surface experiences rapid changes in temperature—is one of the leading reasons a glass cooktop can crack. For example, placing a cold pot onto a hot burner or pouring cold liquid onto a heated surface can stress the glass and cause it to break. Rough or warped cookware can also damage the surface over time. Pots and pans with uneven bottoms may scratch the glass or create uneven pressure during heating. To prevent these problems, it’s best to use cookware with smooth, flat bottoms made from materials such as stainless steel or aluminum. Avoid dragging pans across the surface and instead lift them when moving them. It’s also helpful to allow cookware and the stove to cool gradually before cleaning. Regular cleaning with gentle products and non-abrasive cloths can further protect the surface. With careful use and a few simple habits, a glass top stove can remain both safe and visually appealing for many years.
