Orchid, strong roots and lots of flowers, if you have them: no one thinks about it

Orchids are admired around the world for their elegance, vibrant blooms, and ability to bring a refined touch to any space. However, despite their popularity, many people misunderstand how to properly care for them—especially when it comes to root development. These plants are not only decorative but also beneficial to indoor environments, helping to support air balance and create a more refreshing atmosphere. Like many houseplants, orchids play a role in maintaining a healthy ecosystem, and their flowers can even support pollinators when placed near windows or balconies. Yet their delicate appearance often leads owners to treat them too cautiously or, in some cases, incorrectly. One of the most common mistakes involves trimming their visible roots, which are often misunderstood.

These exposed or “aerial” roots are actually essential to the orchid’s health. Rather than removing them for aesthetic reasons, it’s important to understand that they help the plant absorb moisture and nutrients from the air. Cutting them can weaken the orchid and reduce its ability to produce flowers. A better approach is to gently support these roots by ensuring they remain hydrated and gradually guiding them into a suitable growing environment. When the plant begins to outgrow its container, repotting into a slightly larger pot with proper orchid mix can encourage stronger growth. With the right care and patience, orchids can develop healthier roots and reward their owners with long-lasting, beautiful blooms.
