Tragedy as teen drowns rescuing four children – his family reveals his legacy

16-year-old Bryce Brooks from Atlanta tragically lost his life while vacationing with his family in Pensacola. When Bryce and his friends saw four children struggling in a strong current, they immediately jumped into the water to rescue them. While Bryce managed to help, he was soon pulled under by the current himself. Family friend Charles “Uncle Chuck” Johnson II attempted to save him but was also swept under.

Strangers were able to pull both Bryce and Uncle Chuck from the water, and they were airlifted to the hospital. Sadly, despite efforts to save them, both were pronounced dead. The community honored Bryce with a heartfelt balloon release at his high school. His mother, Crystal Brooks, expressed her pride in her son’s bravery, saying, “He stepped into his manhood to save these children, and that makes me proud.”

Bryce was an honor roll student with a love for music and fashion, and he always looked after his younger brother. Following his death, a fundraiser raised over $78,000 to support the grieving family. Inspired by Bryce’s selfless act, his family established the Bryce Brooks Foundation, dedicated to promoting water safety and drowning prevention.

The foundation now provides free swimming lessons for children and adults and offers scholarships for teens to become certified lifeguards. Its first six scholarships have already been awarded, including one to Uncle Chuck’s son, ensuring that Bryce’s legacy of courage and care continues to save lives.
