Hantavirus spreads to Europe in alarming update after cruise deaths

An eighth case of hantavirus linked to the cruise ship MV Hondius has now been confirmed after a former passenger was admitted to a hospital in Zurich. The man, who had recently returned from South America with his wife, was alerted by email from the ship’s operator about a possible outbreak. After developing symptoms, he was immediately placed in quarantine and is now receiving treatment at University Hospital Zurich, while his wife is self-isolating despite showing no signs of illness. Swiss health authorities say the overall risk to the public remains low and consider further cases in the country unlikely, though contact tracing is still ongoing as a precaution.

The outbreak has drawn international attention, with the World Health Organisation tracking more than 80 passengers and several crew members linked to infected individuals. At least five people connected to the cruise have fallen ill and three have died, with fears that the Andes strain of hantavirus may be involved. This rare variant is especially concerning because it can, in limited cases, spread between humans and carries a fatality rate estimated between 20 and 40 percent. Symptoms can take up to eight weeks to appear and often begin with fever, fatigue, and muscle pain before progressing to severe respiratory or kidney complications. Health experts stress that while the situation is serious, coordinated monitoring, quarantine, and evacuation measures are helping to contain further spread among passengers and crew.
