Nine-Year-Old Boy Passes Away After Tragic School Playground Accident in Massachusetts

Nine-year-old Zakaria Bel Qaid was spending a normal afternoon on the playground outside Winthrop Elementary School in Melrose when tragedy suddenly struck. On May 4, 2026, strong winds caused a large tree from a neighboring historic property to collapse through a fence and onto the playground, injuring Zakaria, another child, and an adult nearby. While the other victims were treated and released, Zakaria later died from his injuries. Witnesses described the terrifying moment as children were playing after school like they did every day. The loss devastated the community, especially after Zakaria’s family shared emotional tributes describing him as energetic, loving, confident, and deeply devoted to his family. He had just celebrated his ninth birthday and often joked that turning 10 would make him a “double high five.” Friends and neighbors quickly gathered outside the school, leaving flowers and messages in memory of the young boy whose life ended far too soon.

Zakaria was also a talented young skier who had recently achieved national success at the USASA National Championships. Just weeks before the accident, he won the 2026 Ruggie Boys Ski Cross National Championship and also earned a freestyle title, accomplishments his family said meant everything to him. Investigators later confirmed the fallen tree had been inspected days earlier by a certified arborist but had not been identified as dangerous. As authorities continue investigating the collapse, questions remain about whether the accident could have been prevented. Meanwhile, another heartbreaking tragedy unfolded nearby in Wellesley, where siblings Ella and Kai MacAusland were found dead inside their home following a welfare check. Their mother, Janette MacAusland, was later charged in connection with the deaths. Both communities are now mourning unimaginable losses while schools and local leaders provide counseling and support to grieving families and children.
