My Mom Fell Into a Coma After an Incident – When I Was at the Hospital, a Nurse Pulled Me Aside and Said, ‘Your Father Was Lying. Watch the Security Footage’

Sony has agreed to a preliminary $7.85 million settlement after allegations that its PlayStation Store operated as a monopoly by restricting third-party retailers from selling digital game vouchers. The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, claims Sony violated federal antitrust laws by forcing customers to purchase digital titles exclusively through the PlayStation Network, allowing the company to control pricing without competition. Although Sony denies any wrongdoing, the agreement marks a major development in a case that has been ongoing since 2024. The court has not yet ruled on liability, and a final approval hearing is expected in October 2026. If approved, the settlement would resolve claims from PlayStation users who purchased certain digital games between April 1, 2019, and December 31, 2023.

If the settlement is approved, eligible users are expected to receive compensation in the form of cash-equivalent PlayStation Network credits. The payout pool, however, is relatively small once legal fees, administrative costs, and attorney expenses are deducted, meaning individual payments are likely to amount to only a few dollars per person. Eligibility applies to customers in the United States who purchased specific PlayStation digital titles through the PlayStation Store between 2019 and 2023. Affected users choose to opt out or object to the agreement, but doing so preserves their right to pursue separate legal action. Otherwise participation in the settlement will waive future claims related to the same issue. The case highlights scrutiny of digital marketplaces and how platform holders control pricing and distribution.
