After Days on the Hantavirus-Hit Cruise Ship, 17 Americans Have Been Evacuated – What We Know

Seventeen American passengers spent days stranded at sea aboard the expedition cruise ship MV Hondius after a rare Andes virus outbreak linked to multiple deaths disrupted what began as a scenic journey through remote regions of the South Atlantic. The voyage, which departed Ushuaia on April 1, 2026, carried travelers across some of the world’s most isolated destinations, but turned into a medical emergency after a passenger fell ill and died on April 11. Over the following weeks, additional cases emerged, including the ship’s doctor, who later tested positive, leaving passengers without stable medical leadership during a rapidly escalating crisis. As concern spread, international health authorities coordinated an evacuation, ultimately airlifting the 17 Americans from Tenerife in Spain’s Canary Islands, with two passengers transported in biocontainment units as a precaution while one case was confirmed positive and another symptomatic.

Federal agencies, including the CDC and the Department of Health and Human Services, organized a specialized airlift to return the group safely to the United States. The passengers are now en route to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, where they will undergo evaluation in the nation’s only federally funded quarantine unit designed for high-risk infectious disease containment. Officials emphasized that transmission risk remains low and that most exposed individuals are asymptomatic, with monitoring planned for up to 42 days. Acting CDC leadership also stressed that the situation differs significantly from COVID-19 and does not warrant public panic. As the aircraft carrying the evacuated Americans departed Europe, families and officials alike expressed relief that the ordeal at sea had ended, even as questions remain about how the outbreak began and how a peaceful expedition through some of the world’s most remote waters turned into a multinational medical response.
