A heartbreaking crash in Colorado has left many people stunned after a 5-year-old girl survived for more than a day trapped beside her deceased parents in a wrecked pickup truck hidden beneath a highway embankment. Authorities say the crash happened near Bayfield, Colorado, along U.S. Highway 160, when a blue Chevrolet S-10 veered off the road, rolled roughly 40 feet down a hillside, and landed upside down so far out of view that passing drivers reportedly mistook the wreckage for debris. Emergency crews were not called until around 12:35 p.m. on Saturday, May 2, after someone returned to investigate the object they had spotted the previous day. Inside the crushed truck, rescuers discovered 25-year-old Devante Griffin and 24-year-old Klariza Tarango, both from Farmington, New Mexico, dead at the scene. Their daughter, Kayce Griffin, somehow survived the terrifying ordeal and remained inside the vehicle for well over 24 hours before help finally arrived.
What has affected many people most is the chilling realization that Kayce spent that entire time alone beside her parents before rescuers reached her. According to authorities, when first responders arrived at the crash site, the little girl climbed out of the wreckage herself and walked uphill toward them. Despite suffering only minor injuries, the emotional trauma surrounding the accident has devastated loved ones and shaken even experienced emergency crews. Investigators have ruled out excessive speed and impairment, though they are still trying to determine what caused the truck to leave the roadway. Officials also noted that neither adult appeared to be wearing seat belts and that Kayce was not secured in a booster seat at the time of the crash. Family members have since launched a fundraiser to help cover funeral costs while supporting Kayce, who has now reportedly been reunited with her grandfather after surviving an unimaginable tragedy.
