Why you get ‘squiggly floaters’ in your eyes as expert explains what to do if you see them

Floaters in your vision can feel like small squiggly shadows drifting across your sight, almost like you need invisible windscreen wipers in your eyes. Most of the time, these shapes are harmless and simply part of a natural process called posterior vitreous detachment (PVD), where the gel-like substance inside the eye changes and tiny collagen fibres clump together. These clumps cast shadows on the retina, which is what creates the appearance of moving spots, strands, or cobweb-like shapes—especially noticeable when looking at bright backgrounds like a white wall or clear sky. According to eye specialists, PVD is very common and often not dangerous, particularly as people age. However, even though it is usually benign, it is still important to pay attention when new floaters suddenly appear, as they can occasionally signal something more serious happening inside the eye.

In some cases, floaters may be linked to retinal tears or even retinal detachment, which requires urgent medical attention. Doctors explain that while only a small percentage of people with PVD develop a retinal tear, the risk becomes significant if that tear progresses into a detachment, potentially threatening vision. Warning signs include a sudden increase in floaters, flashes of light, or a shadow spreading across your vision. Experts strongly advise seeing an optician or eye specialist as soon as new floaters appear, rather than ignoring them, because early detection can prevent long-term damage. Although treatments like laser surgery exist to address problematic floaters or retinal issues, they carry risks and are only used when necessary. In most cases, floaters are simply a harmless part of eye aging, but knowing the difference between normal changes and warning signs is crucial for protecting long-term eye health and preserving clear vision.
