Doctor explains why ‘sleepmaxxing’ could actually be harming your health

Health experts are warning that the viral “sleepmaxxing” trend may actually be harming people instead of helping them rest better. The trend, which has gained hundreds of millions of views online, encourages people to optimize every aspect of their sleep using trackers, routines, supplements, and strict schedules. While improving sleep habits can be beneficial, Dr. Deborah Lee explained that obsessing over achieving “perfect sleep” can trigger a condition called orthosomnia. This happens when people become so anxious about their sleep quality that they unintentionally make it harder to fall asleep. Constantly checking smartwatch data and worrying about reaching an exact number of hours creates stress, which interferes with the relaxed state the body needs for proper rest. Experts say sleep should not feel like a competition or performance, because anxiety itself can become the biggest obstacle to healthy sleep patterns.

Other sleep-related health concerns are also gaining attention from medical professionals. A recent Australian study found that bedroom temperatures above 75 degrees Fahrenheit can place significant strain on the heart, especially in adults over 65. Researchers discovered that hotter sleeping environments increase cardiovascular stress and reduce the body’s ability to recover overnight. Doctors also warned about conditions like pulsatile tinnitus, where people hear a heartbeat-like sound in their ears, sometimes linked to blood flow problems or other medical conditions. Meanwhile, sleep paralysis continues to fascinate researchers, with experts explaining that it occurs when the brain wakes before the body regains movement during REM sleep. Despite these concerns, doctors agree that focusing on sleep health is still important. The key difference is balance: healthy sleep habits should improve well-being, not create fear, pressure, or obsession around rest.
