Doctors warn against beauty trend that causes reptile skin

Mesotherapy, a cosmetic treatment first developed in France in the 1950s, is making a major comeback as social media influencers promote it as a quick solution for wrinkles, under-eye bags, and stubborn fat. The procedure involves injecting vitamins, enzymes, hormones, and plant extracts beneath the skin to tighten and rejuvenate the face. While many online videos present mesotherapy as a cheaper and easier alternative to Botox or fillers, doctors warn that the reality can be far more dangerous. The injections often leave raised bumps and swelling that create a reptile-like texture across the skin, and experts say the risks become even greater when untrained people attempt the treatment at home. Because mesotherapy formulas are not tightly regulated, providers may use different mixtures, including prescription drugs or unverified substances that could cause severe reactions.

Medical professionals are increasingly concerned about the growing number of DIY mesotherapy kits being sold online for low prices, encouraging people to inject themselves without proper knowledge or supervision. Dermatologists warn that the delicate under-eye area is especially dangerous because it contains sensitive blood vessels that can easily be damaged. According to experts, complications may include long-lasting bruising, infections, allergic reactions, skin necrosis, scarring, granulomas, and even permanent blindness if products are injected incorrectly. Doctors also caution that many social media posts only show temporary “results” while hiding the painful side effects and long-term consequences. Although mesotherapy is marketed as a fast and affordable beauty fix, specialists stress that cosmetic trends should never outweigh safety. They encourage anyone considering the procedure to consult qualified medical professionals instead of trusting viral videos or cheap at-home kits that may put both appearance and health at serious risk.
