Still grieving the sudden loss of her husband, Kate accepts an invitation from her sister-in-law, Miranda, hoping for comfort.
Instead of sympathy, Miranda shocks her by asking for the baby fund Kate and her late husband had saved to start a family — suggesting she use it for Miranda’s kids’ college tuition.
Kate is stunned, but Miranda goes further, handing her a list of chores to do for the week: picking up her kids, helping with homework, and baking cookies. Kate breaks down, unable to believe Miranda’s selfishness.
Suddenly, there’s a knock at the door. Kate’s mother-in-law, Susan, storms in, having overheard everything through an open window. Furious, she tells Miranda:
“You will never see a dime of that money. What you’ve done today is cruel.”
Miranda explodes, but Susan defends Kate, telling her to go home and heal in peace.
Later, Kate receives a bitter text from Miranda blaming her for “turning Mom against me.” Kate deletes it, finally realizing what Peter once told her:
“Some people love you only when you’re useful. The rest love you because you’re you.”
