Teen who had ear ripped off after flipping into pool on ‘senior skip day’ now suing parents who hosted

A 14-year-old girl in Pitcairn, near Pittsburgh, suffered devastating injuries after attempting a dangerous “fire-breathing” social media challenge involving rubbing alcohol. Officials said the teen drank isopropyl alcohol and tried to blow flames, but the stunt went horribly wrong, leaving her with severe burns to her face, neck, and chest. Fire chiefs described her as “lucky to be alive,” warning that the flames could easily have entered her digestive tract and caused fatal internal injuries. The girl remains hospitalized and intubated while receiving treatment for burns covering eight percent of her body. Authorities stressed that rubbing alcohol is a highly flammable cleaning chemical, not something meant to be ingested or used for dangerous internet challenges. Fire Marshal Al Hussey and Fire Chief Tommy Dick urged parents to monitor household chemicals, lighters, and matches while also educating children about fire safety and the serious risks of copying online trends.

The incident has renewed concerns about the growing number of children harmed while attempting viral social media challenges. Officials pointed to several recent cases, including a nine-year-old Illinois boy who suffered burns after microwaving a sensory toy he saw online, and a 13-year-old girl in the UK who died after participating in a dangerous “chroming” trend involving inhaling deodorant fumes. Experts say many teenagers underestimate the risks because online videos often hide the real consequences behind views and popularity. Parents are being encouraged to stay involved in their children’s online activities, discuss internet safety openly, and watch for potentially dangerous behavior at home. Fire officials emphasized that one reckless moment inspired by social media can leave permanent physical and emotional scars, turning a viral trend into a life-changing tragedy for families.
