Text messages between Tyler Robinson, 22, and his roommate Lance Twiggs helped the FBI track down Robinson, who is accused of killing Charlie Kirk. Twiggs, who is reportedly transitioning, has cooperated with investigators and is not facing any charges.
Court documents show Robinson instructed Twiggs to retrieve a rifle he had hidden in a bush. The messages described modifying the weapon, engraving bullets, and changing clothes to avoid detection. Authorities later recovered a bolt-action rifle and ammunition engraved with phrases from memes and video games, including Helldivers 2 and “Bella Ciao.”
Robinson was identified after his father recognized him in photos released by authorities. When confronted, Robinson confessed to killing Kirk but refused to surrender. His father and a youth pastor contacted the U.S. Marshals, who took him into custody.
The apartment Robinson shared with Twiggs was near Robinson’s parents’ home. Neighbors reported seeing suspicious out-of-state visitors at the property weeks before the arrest. Computers and other evidence from the apartment were sent to Quantico for analysis.
Robinson is being held without bail on charges of aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, and obstruction of justice. Utah officials, including Governor Spencer Cox, said the death penalty is under consideration, a move supported by former President Donald Trump.
Robinson’s grandmother insists he is innocent, claiming he never showed interest in firearms or violence and suggesting the case may involve mistaken identity.
